Why does it matter whether your engineer is Gas Safe registered? Most importantly, because gas work must be carried out legally and by someone who is properly qualified for the work they’re doing.
Anyone carrying out gas work covered by the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations must meet the relevant legal requirements, including Gas Safe registration. At Campbell Gas, our Gas Safe registration number is 302564, and every new boiler installation is carried out with gas safety at the heart of the job.
You don’t have to simply take an engineer’s word for it either. You can check their Gas Safe registration and qualifications yourself before work begins.

It’s a Legal Requirement, Not a Nice to Have
Gas Safe Register is the official register of gas businesses legally permitted to carry out gas work in the UK. It replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in 2009.
For domestic gas work such as installing, servicing or repairing a gas boiler, you should use a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified for that particular type of work.
Registration alone isn’t the only thing to check. Engineers have specific categories of work they are qualified to carry out, which is why checking their Gas Safe ID card is important.
What Can Go Wrong with Illegal Gas Work?
The risks of incorrectly carried out gas work can be serious.
Poorly installed or maintained gas appliances, flues and pipework can create a risk of gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is particularly dangerous because you cannot see, smell or taste it.
Using an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer therefore isn’t simply about complying with the rules. It is an important part of protecting the people and property around the gas appliance.
What Should You Do If You Smell Gas?
If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak, don’t attempt to investigate or repair the problem yourself.
Avoid naked flames and anything that could create a spark, open doors and windows where it is safe to do so, and turn off the gas supply at the meter if you know how and can do so safely.
Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
How to Check an Engineer Is Gas Safe Registered
Before allowing someone to carry out gas work in your home, there are a few simple checks you can make:
- Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. A registered gas engineer should be able to show you their current card.
- Check the engineer and business with Gas Safe Register. You can verify registration through gassaferegister.co.uk.
- Check what work they are qualified to carry out. The back of the engineer’s ID card lists the categories of gas work they are currently qualified for.
- Check rather than relying on a logo. Seeing Gas Safe branding on a website or van isn’t a substitute for verifying the engineer’s details.
The last point is particularly important because being registered for one category of gas work doesn’t automatically mean an engineer is qualified for every type of gas appliance.
What Does Gas Safe Registration Actually Tell You?
Gas Safe registration confirms that a business is legally registered to carry out gas work and that its registered engineers must hold the appropriate qualifications for the categories of work they undertake.
It shouldn’t be confused with manufacturer accreditation, which is separate.
Campbell Gas is also an accredited Worcester Bosch installer and a Vaillant Advance installer. These manufacturer schemes are additional to Gas Safe registration; they don’t replace the legal requirements surrounding gas work.
